FRIDAY COLLEGE HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Clarkson takes down No. 8 North Dakota 5-2 as five different players score to back Soderwall’s 18 saves

Two goals separated by less than two minutes gave Clarkson an early lead that it would never relinquish as the Golden Knights earned their second win over a top-10 team with a 5-2 victory over No. 8 North Dakota Friday night at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y.

After Ben Strinden gave North Dakota a 1-0 lead at 4:23 of the first period, Owen Van Steensel (12:02) and Luka Sukovic (14:06) made it 2-1 Golden Knights.

Tristan Sarsland and Tate Taylor scored in the second period for Clarkson and Erik Bargholtz added an empty-net goal to back goalie Shane Soderwall’s 18 saves in goal.

Will Zellers netted a third-period goal for the Fighting Hawks, while Gibson Homer finished with 24 stops between the pipes.

Porter Martone, Charlie Stramel, Gavin O’Connell and Tommi Männistö all scored and goalie Trey Augustine made all 24 saves as Michigan State blanked Northern Michigan 4-0 at the Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich.

Wildcats netminder Oliver Auyeung-Ashton stopped 36 shots.

No. 2 Western Michigan 5, No. 3 Michigan 2

Grant Slukynsky posted two goals and goaltender Hampton Slukynsky made 28 saves as Western Michigan downed Michigan 5-2 at Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Liam Valente, Zack Sharp and Bobby Cowan added goals for the Broncos and Ty Henricks rang up three assists to help WMU end Michigan’s seven-game winning streak to start the season.

Dakoda Rheaume-Mullen and Will Horcoff scored for the Wolverines, who had defeated Western Michigan 4-0 at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich., Thursday night. Michigan goalie Jack Ivankovic made 18 stops.

No. 11 UConn 8, No. 4 Boston University 4

Ethan Gardula and Carlin Dezainde each scored twice to lead UConn to an 8-4 win over BU at Agganis Arena in Boston.

Kaden Shahan and Ethan Whitcomb each tallied three assists for the Huskies and goalie Tyler Muszelik stopped 30 shots.

Tom Messineo, Tabor Heaslip, Joey Muldowney and Jake Richard also scored for UConn.

For the Terriers, Owen McLaughlin scored twice and Cole Eiserman and Jack Murtagh netted one each.

BU goalies Max Lacroix and Mikhail Yegorov combined to make 32 saves.

No. 5 Penn State 3, Stonehill 2

JJ Wiebusch scored the game-winning goal on the power play with just 22.5 seconds remaining to cap off a third-period comeback as Penn State defeated Stonehill 3-2 at Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa.

Gavin McKenna and Matt DiMarsico also scored for the Nittany Lions, who got 30 saves from goaltender Josh Fleming.

Stonehill struck for a pair of quick goals just 24 seconds apart early in the second period to take a 2-1 lead as Joel Lehtinen and Evan Orr scored off broken plays and bouncing pucks at 6:03 and 6:27, respectively.

Stonehill goalie Connor Androlewicz made 33 saves.

Merrimack 4, No. 6 Quinnipiac 1

Nick Pierre scored two goals as Merrimack defeated Quinnipiac 4-1 at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass.

Trevor Hoskin and Michael Emerson added goals and Max Lundgren made 27 saves in goal for the Warriors.

Chris Pelosi scored the Bobcats’ lone goal and goaltender Matej Marinov collected 23 saves.

No. 7 Denver 7, No. 9 Boston College 3

Denver used a three-goal second period to break open Friday night’s matchup at Boston College to take a 7-3 win at Kelley Rink at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Seven different Pioneers scored and all four forward lines produced goals, while Boston Buckberger and Hagen Burrows each registered two assists in the victory.

Kristian Epperson, Brendan McMorrow, Eric Jamieson, Rieger Lorenz, Sam Harris, Eric Pohlkamp and Jake Fisher all found the back of the net for DU.

Denver goaltender Quentin Miller made 31 saves, playing in front of family and friends that made the six-hour drive from his hometown in Montreal.

Andre Gasseau, Jake Sondreal and James Hagens scored for BC and goalie Louka Cloutier turned aside 20 shots.

Colgate 3, No. 10 Maine 2

Max Nagel’s power-play goal at 15:02 of the second period stood as the game winner as Colgate downed Maine 3-2 at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine, for the first time since Jan. 9, 2016

Michael Neumeier and Robby Newton also scored for Colgate and Reid Dyck finished with 25 saves between the pipes.

For the Black Bears, Oskar Komarov and Justin Poirier scored and goaltender Albin Boija made 12 saves.

No. 18 Minnesota Duluth 3, No. 12 Minnesota 0

Adam Gajan stopped all 17 shots fired his way as Minnesota Duluth shut out Minnesota 3-0 at 3M Arena at Mariucci in Minneapolis, Minn.

Daniel Shlaine, Zam Plante and Grayden Siepmann scored the Bulldogs’ goals.

Gophers goalie Luca Di Pasquo finished with 21 saves.

No. 13 UMass 5, Omaha 4

UMass’ Cam O’Neill tied the game 4-4 at 11:19 of the third period and then Jack Musa’s goal at 19:02 was the game winner as the Minutemen rallied to beat Omaha 5-4 at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Neb.

Mikey DeAngelo, Larry Keenan and Owen Mehlenbacher also scored for UMass, while goaltender Michael Hrabal made 29 saves.

For the Mavericks, Maxime Pellerin tallied two goals, Tyler Rollwagen and Luke Woodworth one each, and goalie Simon Latkoczy recorded 31 saves.

Sacred Heart 2, No. 14 Ohio State 1 (OT)

Felix Trudeau scored the tying goal on a power play at 15:29 of the third period and then won it 23 seconds into overtime as Sacred Heart dropped Ohio State 2-1 at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Pioneers goalie Ajeet Gundarah made 22 saves.

Nathan Lewis scored for the Buckeyes and goalie Kristoffer Eberly stopped 22 shots.

No. 15 Providence 2, St. Thomas 2 (St. Thomas wins shootout)

Opening up the new Lee & Penny Anderson Arena in St. Thomas, Minn., visiting Providence scored twice in the third period to gain a 2-2 tie with UST.

The Tommies then won the shootout 2-0 after nothing was settled in overtime.

John Mustard and Aleksi Kivioja scored for the Friars and goalie Philip Svedebäck made 24 saves.

Nathan Pilling and Lucas Van Vliet scored for St. Thomas and netminder Aaron Trotter finished with 38 saves.

Five different players found the back of the net as Wisconsin upended Alaska 5-3 from the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis.

Simon Tassy, Ryan Botterill, Jack Horbach, Joe Palodichuk and Kyle Kukkonen scored for the Badgers with Daniel Hauser making 15 saves between the pipes.

For the Nanooks, Chase Dafoe, Rylen Roersma and Alexander Malinowski scored and goalies Calvin Vachon and Lassi Lehti combined on a 41-save effort.

No. 20 Minnesota State 4, Rensselaer 2

Tristan Lemyre, Jack Smith, Jacob Conrad and Evan Murr scored as Minnesota State doubled up RPI 4-2 at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in Mankato, Minn.

Mavericks goalie Alex Tracy finished with 17 saves.

For the Engineers, Rainers Rullers and Filip Sitar scored and goalie Nate Krawchuk stopped 36 shots.
