Majority of 2025 PWHL training camp roster spots filled by former NCAA players

PWHL teams recently announced their rosters for an upcoming preseason camp set to start Nov. 12. In total, 234 women received invites, up 59 players from the inaugural season, thanks in large part to the expansion and addition of two new teams in Vancouver and Seattle.

Of the 234 invitees, all but 10 played collegiately in North America, which is the same number of international invitees as last season, though they aren’t necessarily the same exact players. There are 15 invitees who played collegiately with USports programs in Canada, up four from last year, and 209 women that played collegiately in the NCAA. That means 89% of the players invited to training camp in 2025 come with NCAA playing experience.

In all, invitees represent eight USports universities, up one from 2024, but the universities represented have changed quite a bit. In the U.S., 35 different NCAA institutions are represented — two more than last season. There are 36 players who played for more than one program and in the interest of ease and clarity, those players are counted as alumnae of both institutions, meaning there are effectively 245 alumnae spots counted and allocated.

The WCHA leads the conferences with 93 alumnae receiving invites (and giving it credit for three North Dakota players). Overall,  Ohio State leads the schools with 23 former player invited to camp.

All six AHA schools that played last season are represented, as are all eight WCHA schools. Eleven of 12 ECAC schools have players that made the camps rosters as well as nine of 10 Hockey East schools.
