Women’s Hockey Weekend Wrap – October 20, 2025

Ice Breaker

(1) Wisconsin vs. Vermont

Caroline Harvey and Kelly Gorbatenko each had two goals and an assist to lead Wisconsin to a 8-1 lead on Friday. Lacey Eden also had a goal and her two assists put her over 100 for her career. Stella Retrum was the goal-scorer for Vermont and per the broadcast, it was the first goal UVM has ever scored on the Badgers.

(1) Wisconsin vs. Union

Cassie Hall scored her third goal of the weekend on the power play (and on her birthday) early in the first to put Wisconsin up 1-0. Kelly Gorbatenko and Lacey Eden scored in the second and Eden added another in the third to secure the 4-0 win and Ice Breaker tournament win.

(2) Ohio State at (3) Minnesota

The end of this series is what folks will be talking about the most, as it ended in a brawl and nine penalties, including two disqualifications, were handed out. Before we got to that point, the teams split the weekend series. On Saturday, Ohio State showed off the relentless pressure they’ve become known for, essentially shutting down Minnesota’s high-powered offense. OSU basically kept the Gophers from transitioning at all, going heavy on the forecheck to win pucks and keep Minnesota on their heels. Despite clearly having the advantage, OSU was up just 1-0 after one on a Kassidy Carmichael power play goal. Joy Dunne and Hilda Svensson extended the lead to 3-0 in the second. Madison Kaiser broke the shutout with a late goal, but Jocelyn Amos scored on the empty netter seconds after the Gopher pulled the goalie and secured the 4-1 win. The tides turned on Sunday as Minnesota came out with more energy and Bella Fanale ripped a shot just five minutes in that helped set the tone. The Gophers were incredibly efficient, scoring six goals on just 22 shots on frame. Josefin Bouveng and Ava Lindsay added to the lead in the first before Joy Dunne scored in the final minute of the period, ripping a shot directly off the faceoff. But the Gophers put down any momentum early in the second when Jamie Nelson scored her first with the team. That goal chased OSU goalie Hailey MacLeod in favor of Genny Klein. Sanni Vanhanen cut into the lead in the opening minute of the third to make it a 4-2 game. The Buckeyes looked to be putting the pressure on but Nelli Laitinen put the puck toward net from the blue line and lit the lamp to make it 5-2. Jenna Raunio scored her first collegiate goal to make it 5-3. Emma Kreisz scored on the power play to close out the scoring as Minnesota took the 6-3 win and split.

Minnesota State at (4) Minnesota Duluth

After a scoreless first on Friday, Caitlin Kraemer put UMD on the board early in the second during a delayed penalty, taking the puck off a defensive skate and one-timing it in the back of the net to make it 1-0. After a delay because a fire alarm went off during the second intermission, the Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the third as Kate Kosobud, Mary Kate O’Brien and Rae Mayer each lit the lamp before Kraemer added a second to ice the game and give Minnesota Duluth a 5-0 win. In the second game, Mankato carried a 1-0 late into the third period thanks to a goal by Taylor Otremba. Despite more than doubling MSU in shots and four power plays, Otremba’s goal stood for more than 45 minutes. It took a turnover that Zoey Krock then fed to Grace Sadura in front of the net for the Bulldogs to break through and for things to fall apart for the Mavericks. Thea Johansson scored just 20 seconds later and then added another less than three minutes after that. The first was her 100th career point and the goals put the game away for UMD, giving them the weekend sweep.

Boston College at (5) Cornell

Shannon Pearson scored her first career goal midway through the first and that would prove to be the game-winner for Cornell in their first game of the season. Béatrice Perron-Roy extended the lead in the second and then assisted on Piper Grober’s third period goal to secure the 3-0 victory. On Saturday, four different Big Red skaters – Karel Prefontaine, Sarah MacEachern, Nora Curtis, and Grace Dwyer – scored to give Cornell a 4-0 lead by early in the final frame. But Boston College would not go down without a fight as Lauren Glaser scored an unassisted goal with about 10 left in regulation and then Ava Thomas went coast-to-coast to set up Tricia Piku for a second goal with about five to play. But the Cornell defense stepped up and the Eagles ran out of time to complete the comeback as the Big Red took a 4-2 win and weekend sweep.

(15) Mercyhurst at (6) Penn State

Tessa Janecke scored eight seconds into the second, setting a new record for the fastest goal to start a period by a Nittany Lion in program history while Danica Maynard added to her quick start and Katelyn Roberts also lit the lamp to lead Penn State to a 3-0 win. In game two, PSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first thanks to goals from Grace Outwater, Roberts and Maddy Christian. They picked back up in the third, as Mikah Keller, Janecke and Outwater all scored to extend the lead to 6-0. Regina Metzler ruined the shutout, scoring late for Mercyurst to make it a 6-1 final.

(12) Northeastern at (7) Quinnipiac

With all due respect to everyone else playing in these games, this was the Kahlen Lamarche show. After scoring 14 goals in 38 games last season, she’s already at 12 goals through eight games, including seven of her team’s nine goals this past weekend. Emerson Jarvis scored Quinnipiac’s opener and the final goal of the weekend. Everything else came from Lamarche. On Friday, the Bobcats went ahead 3-0 by the middle of the first. But Northeastern found their footing and pushed back, scoring three straight goals of their own as Éloïse Caron scored and then Jules Constantinople added two power play goals to tie the game 3-3 early in the third. But Lamarche was not to be stopped as she scored once at even strength and once on the advantage in the final four minutes to secure the 5-3 win for Quinnipiac. On Saturday, a quiet first let way to Caron scoring early in the second. Lamarche tied it about six minutes later, but Allie Lalonde’s goal sent the Huskies to the locker room up 2-1. Lamarche tied the game early in the fourth and added a power play goal with under two to play to give her team the lead. Jarvis closed things out with an empty-netter to secure the 4-2 win.

(8) Colgate at Maine

In the first game, Emma Pais scored her first career hat trick on a four-point night to lead the Raiders to a 5-2 win. After a scoreless first frame, Colgate used the momentum of killing a penalty to open the scoring as Ava Wood made it 1-0. Pais’ first of the night was unassisted and doubled the lead to 2-0. Sade Sandilands got Maine on the board to make it 2-1, but Pais responded just 24 seconds later to reestablish the two-goal lead. In the third, Campbell Rucinski pulled the Black Bears back within one, making it 3-2. Pais added a late power play goal and Madeline Palumbo’s empty-netter secured the 5-2 win. Saturday’s game looked like it might be more of the same as the Raiders scored just 27 seconds in thanks to Alexis Petford. But Maine’s defense stepped up and the offense found their footing in the second as Raegan Wurm and Lily Fetch scored 80 seconds apart to give the Black Bears their first lead of the weekend. Kiia Lahtinen made 40 saves in the game and her defense added 24 blocks. Colgate had four power plays after Maine took the lead, but the Black Bears held them off to take the 2-1 upset win.

(9) Clarkson at Providence

In the first game, Raedyn Spademan’s power play goal had Clarkson up 1-0. It looked like the Golden Knights had doubled their lead, but a challenge for goaltender interference was successful and the teams went to the first intermission with the Golden Knights in the lead. Cristina Cavaliere tied the game on the power play in the second. Reichen Kirchmair scored the eventual game-winner midway through the final frame and then the Friars stood strong, killing a major penalty, to take the 2-1 win. In the second game of the series, a slow start and some penalties marked a scoreless first. Andrea Trnková scored on the power play in the second to get Clarkson on the board. Sara Manness tipped in a pass to extend the lead to 2-0 in the third and Lara Beecher added an empty-netter to secure the 3-0 win and split the series.

St. Thomas at (10) St. Cloud State

It was an epically close series in St. Cloud as these two teams split a pair of 4-3 overtime wins. On Friday afternoon, the teams traded goals back and forth starting with Rylee Bartz’s unassisted tally. Alice Sauriol tied the game on the power play later in the first to make it a 1-1 game at intermission. Ellah Hause scored a power play goal of her own in the second to give St. Thomas the 2-1 lead heading into the third. Then things got hectic. Lauren Zimmermann’s breakaway goal tied the game once more with about nine left in regulation. Cara Sajevic replied just two minutes later to make it 3-2 Tommies. SCSU pulled their goalie and thought they’d tied the game with about 45 seconds left, but the goal was disallowed due to offsides. But the Huskies didn’t give up and Grace Wolfe scored with about 20 seconds left to force overtime. In the extra frame, Sauriol picked up a turnover and won the game for the Huskies. On Saturday, Hause scored another power play goal, this time to put the Tommies up 1-0 after one. But St. Cloud took control in the second as Sauriol and Julianna Labbé each lit the lamp to make it 2-1. Then Sofianna Sundelin extended the lead early in the third to make it 3-1. Maddie Brown replied a few minutes later, scoring just as a power play ended. Ilsa Lindaman scored with a few minutes to go to make it a tie game and force overtime. SCSU carried a power play into the extra frame, so we’re playing 4-on-3. But they forgot to watch for Janessa Gazdik as she exited the box. She was off all on her own and buried the puck to give St. Thomas the win and weekend split.

Princeton at (11) Connecticut

On Friday, Tia Chan tied a career-high, making 48 saves and Kyla Josifovic scored a late power play goal to secure a 2-1 win for the Huskies. The Tigers outshot UConn 17-8 in the first period, but the game was scoreless at the first intermission. Claire Murdoch opened the scoring in the second, netting her first of the season to give Connecticut the 1-0 lead. Mackenzie Alexander’s power play goal midway through the third had the game tied 1-1, but just two minutes later, it was Josifovic’s turn, cleaning up the puck after some nice moves right in front of the net by Livvy Dewar. On Saturday, Julia Pellerin opened the scoring and Josefovic scored twice more to close out the weekend with a sweep thanks to a 3-0 win.

Brown at (13) Boston University

After a scoreless first, Luisa Welcke put BU up 1-0. Just before the intermission, Olivia Fantino tipped in a pass from Avery Lian to tie the game for Brown. A turnover early in the third had Sam Broz finding Monique Lyons in front of the net and the Bears took the lead. They killed three BU penalties in the third to hold on and take the 2-1 upset victory.

(14) St. Lawrence at RIT

On Thursday, SLU pulled away in the third as Meghan Crowley and Brooke Mulvihill each scored their first collegiate goals and Alexa Davis added an empty netter to give the Saints a 3-0 win.  In the second game, RIT took advantage of second chances to earn a 4-1 win and split the series. The Tigers scored in the opening minutes as Linda Rulle picked up a rebound to make it 1-0. Jaidan Fahrny extended the lead, wrapping around to put back another rebound. Abby Hehl cut into the lead around the midpoint of the game to put SLU on the board and make it a 2-1 game. But Brac Kelley put back another rebound, this time on the power play, to extend the lead to 3-1 and added an empty-netter to secure the victory. Sophia Bellina made 38 saves in the win, including 16 in the middle frame.
