FRIDAY COLLEGE HOCKEY ROUNDUP: No. 3 Michigan State downs No. 1 Boston University 4-3; No. 2 Western Michigan gets by UMass Lowell 2-1

Cayden Lindstrom’s first collegiate goal was a beauty and a game winner.

With the Spartans ahead 2-1 and about five minutes left in the first period, Lindstrom took a long pass from Michigan State captain Matt Basgall and skated in alone on Boston University’s Mikhail Yegorov at 15:12, giving the No. 3 Spartans their third goal en route to a 4-2 win over the No. 1 Terriers.

Charlie Strammel, Eric Nilson and Shane Vansaghi also scored for Michigan State — Nilson shorthanded — as the Spartans saw production from three different lines.

The Terriers scored twice on the power play. Sascha Boumedienne scored in the first for Boston University and Ryder Ritchie found the net with a minute left in the game.

For the Spartans, Trey Augustine had 18 saves in his second win of the season. Yegorov stopped 30-of-34 in the Boston University net.

The teams met again Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in Boston University’s Agganis Arena.

No. 2 Western Michigan 2, UMass Lowell 1

On first-period goals from Jamison Sluys and William Whitelaw, Western Michigan slipped by UMass Lowell on the road, 2-1.

The Broncos outshot the River Hawks 33-18, with UMass Lowell’s Austin Elliott making 31 saves in the effort.

Diego Buttazzoni scored Lowell’s only goal on the power play midway through the third period. Western Michigan’s Hampton Slukynsky had 17 saves in his second win of the season.

No. 4 Michigan 10, Robert Morris 2

Trailing 1-0 early in the first period on Ryan Taylor’s goal for Robert Morris, Michigan scored twice in the opening stanza and four times each in the second and third periods, defeating visiting Robert Morris 10-2 in Yost Ice Arena .

Eight Wolverines found the back of the net with Josh Eernisse and Jayden Perron scoring two apiece. Eernisse’s goal at 7:07 in the second period gave Michigan a 3-2 lead and held up as the game winner, and his first of the night was a pretty shorthander late in the opening period.

It’s the second time in six games this season that Michigan has scored 10 or more goals in a game. In a 6-0-0 start to the season, Michigan is averaging 6.67 goals per game and has been held to as few as three goals only once.

After one period of play, Charlie Schenkel replaced Croix Kochendorfer in the Robert Morris net. Schenkel stopped 23-of-29. Kochendorfer made seven saves on 11 shots.

For Michigan, Jack Ivankovic earned his sixth win of the season, making 30 saves on 32 shots as the Wolverines outgunned the Colonials 40-32.

No. 6 Penn State 5, Long Island University 4 (OT)

Aiden Fink had the overtime game-winning goal and Matt DiMarsico scored his second hat trick of the season to lift Penn State past visiting Long Island University, 5-4, in Pegula Ice Arena.

Long Island was up 2-0 on Garrett Valk’s first-period goal and Nick Bernardo’s early second-period power-play tally when DiMarsico scored his first of the night at 2:26 in the second.

JR Perdion scored shorthanded a little over two minutes later to give Long Island another two-goal lead, but DiMarsico’s at 11:12 brought the Nittany Lions to within a goal again, and Jackson Smith’s power-play goal tied the game at 12:43.

DiMarsico’s third goal of the night on the power play at 6:26 in the third period gave Penn State its first lead of the night, but Bernardo’s second goal for the Sharks at 11:27 sent the game to OT.

The Nittany Lions outshot the Sharks 41-36. In net for Long Island, Daniel Duris made 36 saves, including three in overtime. Kevin Reidler had 32 stops on the night for the Nittany Lions.

No. 7 Maine 4, No. 10 Quinnipiac 4 (OT)

Empty-net goals 46 seconds apart from Elliott Groenewold and Jeremy Wilmer tied the game for Quinnipiac and this one against Maine into overtime, which ended in a 4-4 tie in M&T Bank Arena.

Maine led 3-0 after the first period on goals by William Gerrior, Owen Fowler and Miguel Marques.

Ethan Wyttenbach put the Bobcats on the board 14 seconds into the second period. Thomas Freel gave the Black Bears another three-goal lead midway through the second before Markus Vidicek scored for Quinnipiac to make it a 4-2 game after two.

Maine’s Albin Boija had 35 save in the game, including three in overtime. Matej Marinov stopped 18-of-22 for Quinnipiac.

No. 8 North Dakota 5, No. 13 Minnesota 2

EJ Emery and Dylan James each scored twice for North Dakota as the Fighting Hawks skated past visiting Minnesota, 5-2, in Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Mason Moe put the Golden Gophers on the board 2:16 into the game, but James’ first goal of the night four minutes later tied the game.

Tanner Ludtke’s shorthanded goal gave Minnesota another lead at 8:27. Emery scored at 11:09 to make it a 2-2 game after one.

It was Emery’s second goal of the night at 2:52 in the third period that won the game for the Fighting Hawks.

James added his second and Mac Swanson found the empty net to cap the scoring.

The Fighting Hawks outshot the Golden Gophers 32-15. Gibson Homer made 13 saves in his third win of the season. For Minnesota, Nathan Airey stopped 27-of-31.

No. 9 Boston College 5, Rensselaer 1

Boston College exploded for four second-period goals to surge ahead of Rensselaer and win on the road, 5-1.

Jake Sondreal’s first goal of the season at 5:21 in the second was the game winner. James Hagens led the Eagles with two goals and Sondreal and Dean Letourneau each had a goal and an assist. Louka Cloutier made 10 saves on 11 shots for his second win of the season.

Tyler Wallace had the first-period power-play goal for the Engineers. Carson Dorfman made 15 saves in the first period for RPI, with Bruno Bruveris stopping 21 through the final two periods.

Northeastern 4, No. 11 Massachusetts 2

In the only conference action of the night, Northeastern upset No. 11 Massachusetts, 4-2, on the road at the Mullins Center.

Giacomo Martino had the game-winning goal at 17:14 in the second period. Lawton Zacher made 25 saves in the win.

Griffin Erdman, Joe Connor and Dylan Hryckowian also scored for the Huskies.

Scoring for the Minutemen were Bo Cosman and Jack Musa. Massachusetts’ goalie Michael Hrabal stopped 29-of-33.

No. 12 Connecticut 3, No. 16 Ohio State 2

With goals from Mike Murtagh, Kevin Fitzgerald and Tristan Fraser, Connecticut outlasted visiting Ohio State, 3-2, in the Toscano Family Ice Forum.

Tyler Muszelik made 32 saves on 34 shots in his second win of the season.

In net for Ohio State, Kristoffer Eberly made 26 saves. Max Montes and Riley Thompson scored for the Buckeyes.

Augustana 4, No. 15 Arizona State 2

After trailing 2-0 by the midway mark of the first period, Augustana scored four unanswered goals to beat visiting Arizona State in Midco Arena.

Samuel Alfano and Bennett Schimek gave the Sun Devils their early lead, with Leonid Bulgakov scoring for the Vikings late in the first to make it 2-1 after one.

Owen Bohn scored tied the game early in the second period. Ben Troumbly had the game-winning goal at 10:28 in the third.

Colton Friesen hit the empty net for the Vikings. Augustana’s Josh Kotai had the win with 26 saves. Connor Hasley made 19 stops on 22 shots for Arizona State.
