Boston College to retire jerseys of former Eagles standouts Sheehy, Mellor on Feb. 16

 

Boston College will raise the jerseys of former Eagles greats Tim Sheehy and Tom Mellor to the rafters at Kelley Rink on Saturday, Feb. 16 when BC hosts UMass at 8 p.m.”Having your jersey retired is a distinct honor, and these two athletes deserve to see their banner hang in the rafters at Conte Forum,” said BC director of athletics Martin Jarmond in a statement. “Tim and Tom are tremendous representatives of our storied men’s hockey program and of our institution, and we look forward to cementing their place in BC history.”Sheehy shined for Boston College from 1967 to 1970. A two-time All-America selection in 1969 and 1970, Sheehy was named ECAC Player of the Year for the 1969-70 season. He tallied 185 points (74 goals, 111 assists) in his 80-game BC career, leading the Eagles in scoring for three straight seasons. Sheehy is also the second all-time leading scorer in Beanpot history despite playing just three seasons.

A member of the U.S. National Team from 1971-72, he co-captained the Olympic Team that captured the silver medal at the 1972 Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan.Following his graduation from BC, Sheehy played professionally with the New England Whalers, Edmonton Oilers and Birmingham Bulls of the WHA and spent parts of two seasons in the NHL with Detroit and Hartford. He scored a career-high 41 goals with Edmonton and Birmingham during the 1976-77 season.Sheehy was inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1975.Mellor arrived at the Heights in 1969 and finished his career as one of the top scoring defensemen in program history. An All-American and ECAC Player of the Year in 1973, Mellor established a school scoring record for defenseman, tallying 135 points (37 goals, 98 assists) from 1969-71 and 1972-73. His stellar play on the back line helped BC advance to the NCAA championship in 1973 during a 22-win campaign. His 45 assists as a senior still ranks third all-time in Boston College history for a single season.He was a member of the silver medal winning 1972 U.S. Olympic Team with Sheehy and played professionally with the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL and overseas in Sweden following his graduation from Boston College. The Rhode Island native also posted 75 points in 96 career AHL games with the Virginia Wings.Mellor was inducted into the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1980.Sheehy and Mellor will be honored during the first intermission of the UMass game on Feb. 16.
