Holley Tyng, interim head coach of the Colby women’s team, was officially named head coach of the Mules’ program Friday.
A seasoned and energetic leader, Tyng joined Colby last October less than a month before the team’s first practice.
“Holley has a great hockey mind,” said Colby director of athletics Tim Wheaton in a statement. “She brings a wealth of coaching experience and a strong understanding of what it takes to pursue excellence on and off of the ice in an elite academic environment. During her time as our interim coach, Holley has made herself an integral part of the community, both for her players and peers.”
The Providence graduate (and captain as a senior) was previously an associate head coach at Dartmouth, where she started as an assistant coach in 2005. She was part of four NCAA tournament appearances, two ECAC Hockey tournament titles, an Ivy League championship and an ECAC Hockey regular-season title.
“(Colby) had really great leadership in the locker room from our six seniors,” added Tyng. “They were really on board and that was important for us. The players were very accepting of a new perspective. They did everything we asked them to do and we threw a lot at them.”
Colby finished the season at 2-19-3 overall, winning the final two games of the year. The Mules had impressive ties against Bowdoin and St. Anselm, which finished the season at a combined record of 22-2-3.
“We were faced with some challenges and the players never quit,” Tyng said. “They would show up on Monday after a long weekend with smiles on their faces, ready to get prepared for the next game.”
Prior to Dartmouth, Tyng was the head coach of girls hockey at Tabor Academy, her alma mater. She posted a 23-10-5 record in two years.
