Happy New Year and a healthy 2017 to all of the WCHA and college hockey fans that make this a great sport.
Here are three things we learned from the final weekend of 2016:
1. Michigan Tech goalie Angus Redmond rang in the New Year the right way. The freshman goalie only allowed one goal on 46 shots in back-to-back starts at the Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena. Redmond shutout Michigan in the semifinal before finally conceding a goal in a 1-0 overtime loss to Western Michigan in the final.
2. Alaska Anchorage picked up a split with Bemidji State in the lone league series last week. The split was positive news for Michigan Tech, which will take any help it can get in it’s chase to catch Bemidji on top of the WCHA standings in 2017. The Beavers have a 10-point lead in the WCHA standings heading into this week.
3. The WCHA won’t like the non-conference showing from last week. The league went 2-10 in non-conference play with Michigan Tech and Bowling Green picking up the only wins.
