Weekend Picks: Feb. 26

The postseason is here!

Even after the MIAC tournament play-in game Thursday night that saw Concordia (Minn.) eliminate St. Mary’s by a 3-1 score, there is still tons of hockey to play.

Also Thursday, Utica bounced Cortland 5-0 in the ECAC West tournament.

Candace and Matt continue to prognosticate and from here on out, the number of games each week gets smaller and smaller.

Colonial Hockey Tournament – Saturday
Candace: Stevenson should win this, but in this round, I like home ice. Becker 2-1, Morrisville 3-1
Matt: I still say this is all Stevenson, but in the quarterfinals, I like Canton beating Becker and Johnson and Wales upending Morrisville.

ECAC West Tournament – Saturday
Candace: Like Matt, I see Oswego advancing. Oswego 4-2
Matt: Just one game here as Oswego heads to Buffalo State. Should be a close game, but I see Oswego getting the duke here.

MIAC Tournament – Saturday
Candace: This is one of the few upsets I see happening. Augsburg 2-1
Matt: Augsburg at Bethel is intriguing. Both are underrated in my book and Augsburg is in the playoffs for the first time since 2005. That’s motivation enough right there. I’ll pick the Auggies in a mild upset.

NCHA Tournament – Friday-Sunday
Candace: Adrian and Lake Forest are two of the better teams in the country. I like both to advance. Lake Forest 3-1; Adrian 3-1
Matt: Two series here as St. Norbert is at Lake Forest and Adrian hosts St. Scholastica. The last weekend of the regular season was dramatic with Adrian sweeping LFC to take the regular-season crown and I like those two teams to again meet in the playoff championship series. Both Adrian and Lake Forest sweep this weekend.

NEHC Tournament – Saturday
Candace: Home ice takes it in all four. Norwich 4-1; Castleton 2-1; Mass.-Boston 3-2; University of New England 3-2
Matt: I like all the higher seeds winning here — Castleton over Plymouth State, Norwich over Southern Maine, Massachusetts-Boston over Manhattanville and University of New England over Salve Regina. Just don’t see any upsets happening here.

NEHC Women’s Open – Saturday
Candace: I see St. Anselm taking this one. St. Anselm 3-2
Matt: The championship final will be a doozy, but St. Anselm wins it with an overtime win against Franklin Pierce.

NESCAC Tournament – Saturday
Candace: I think it’s home ice in all of the games. Amherst 3-2; Connecticut College 2-1; Middlebury 4-1; Williams 3-2
Matt: The only upset I see here is Trinity beating Williams. Not sure why, just a hunch. Amherst beats Bowdoin, Connecticut College downs Hamilton and Middlebury takes care of Colby.

WIAC Tournament – Friday-Saturday
Candace: I see the two top 10 teams advancing. Wis.-River Falls 3-1, 3-2; Wis.-Stevens Point 3-1; 3-1
Matt: Hoping none of these are decided by a mini game, but Wisconsin-River Falls beats Wisconsin-Eau Claire in two straight and Wisconsin-Stevens Point eliminates Wisconsin-Superior.

Weekend Picks: Feb. 26

I had another absolutely stellar picks weekend last week, going 27-3-4 (.852). I think that’s the best back-to-back performance for me ever. I finished the regular season at 386-102-56 (.761).

For the postseason, I start over, but I’ll also include a season summary in addition to postseason summary each week. Postseason gets harder, so can I stay on top of things?

CHA

RIT at Penn State
I think this might actually be a sweep for the Nittany Lions, though OT wouldn’t surprise me. Penn State 3-2, 3-1

Lindenwood at Robert Morris
The Colonials haven’t been a model of consistency, so three games seem likely. Robert Morris 3-2, Lindenwood 3-2, Robert Morris 2-1

ECAC

Cornell at Clarkson
Cornell showed signs of better hockey last weekend, but they haven’t been consistent. Clarkson 3-1, 3-2

Harvard at Colgate
The Raiders have yet to beat Harvard this year. It should happen at least once this weekend. Colgate 3-2, Harvard 2-1, 3-1

St. Lawrence at Princeton
Another three-game series. Princeton 3-2, St. Lawrence 3-2, Princeton 3-1

Rensselaer at Quinnipiac
As close to a sure thing as there is in the ECAC. Quinnipiac 4-1, 4-2

Hockey East

Maine at Boston College
How many goals will BC get this weekend? What’s the over/under? Boston College 5-1, 6-1

Vermont at Boston University
The Catamounts were one of the few games I picked wrong last week. I don’t see them getting a win. Boston University 4-2, 3-1

Providence at Northeastern
Kendall Coyne might retake the national scoring lead. Northeastern 5-1, 6-1

New Hampshire at Connecticut
How many overtimes in this weekend? Connecticut 2-1, New Hampshire 2-1, Connecticut 2-1

WCHA

Minnesota-Duluth at Bemidji State
The Beavers should emerge with a tough sweep. Bemidji State 3-2, 3-1

Ohio State at Minnesota
A seemingly better and better Amanda Kessel should scare the rest of the country. Minnesota 4-1, 5-1

St. Cloud State at North Dakota
It goes three, but the home team moves on. North Dakota 3-2, St. Cloud 3-2, North Dakota 2-1

Minnesota State at Wisconsin
The Badgers don’t run up the score, but sweep. Wisconsin 4-1, 4-1

Weekend Picks: Feb. 26

Thank you Denver! The Pioneers’ sweep of Colorado College put me five up on Matthew in our picks race. Last week, I went 6-2 (.750), moving to 101-47-14 (.667), while Matthew went 5-3 (.625) to move to 96-52-14 (.635).

Friday-Saturday 2-26-27

Colorado College at Miami
Candace: Miami got swept in Colorado Springs back in December, completing a horrible run, so I think they get two back here. Miami 3-1, 3-2
Matthew: This would’ve been a tougher series to pick a few weeks ago before Miami really got moving. Now, I have the RedHawks taking all six points. Miami 3-1, 3-1

Minnesota-Duluth at No. 3 St. Cloud State
Candace: I’m not sure I’m willing to bet against St. Cloud right now. St. Cloud 3-2, 3-1
Matthew: Duluth played well last weekend but got swept. I’ll go out on a limb and say that doesn’t happen again this week. Minnesota-Duluth 3-2, St. Cloud State 4-2

No. 4 North Dakota at No. 13 Omaha
Candace: Omaha will be motivated, but that hasn’t always been enough for them of late. North Dakota 3-2, 3-1
Matthew: These are must-have points for UNO, but I’m not sure how many the Mavericks get. Omaha 3-2, North Dakota 3-1

No. 8 Denver at Western Michigan
Candace: I think Denver will remember how difficult it was to beat Western in January at Magness and come out flying. Denver 3-2, 4-2
Matthew: Tough to pick against the Pioneers with the way they’ve been playing lately. Denver 3-2, 3-2
