Weekend picks: Jan. 8

Last week, I had a pretty good mark, going 13-5-2 (.700). Calling the Lindenwood-Minesota State split on the wrong days hurt. On the year, I am 220-67-31 (.740).

Here’s this week’s action.

Friday, Jan. 8

St. Lawrence at Brown
The road might make this game closer, but it’s still a Saints’ win. St. Lawrence 3-1

Colgate at Dartmouth
Did the break cure Dartmouth of its malaise? Dartmouth 2-1

Cornell at Harvard
A few years ago, this would have been a battle of top five teams. Harvard 2-1

Quinnipiac at Rensselaser
I think the Bobcats win this in a walk. Quinnipiac 4-1

Princeton at Union
Not the team for Union to get its first win against. Princeton 4-1

Clarkson at Yale
The Elis just can’t seem to get it together. Clarkson 5-1

Friday-Saturday, Jan. 8-9

St. Cloud State at Minnesota State
This could be a weekend where the Mavericks get a WCHA win, but I’ll go with the visitors. St. Cloud 2-1, 3-1

Friday, Sunday, Jan. 8 and 10

Minnesota-Duluth at Wisconsin
This will be closer than the last series, but it’s still a Badgers’ sweep. Wisconsin 4-2, 3-2

Saturday, Jan. 9

Clarkson at Brown
The Bears won’t get any closer in this one. Clarkson 4-2

Cornell at Dartmouth
I like the way Cornell closed the first half. Cornell 3-2

Colgate at Harvard
A battle of two defensive teams. Harvard 2-1

Princeton at Rensselaer
The Engineers are capable of pulling the upset, but I think Princeton keeps rolling. Princeton 3-1

St. Lawrence at Yale
A game I really could flip a coin in and get better results. St. Lawrence 2-1

Boston College at Boston University
A potential trap game for the Eagles in their first action of the second half. Have to go with BC though. Boston College 4-2

RIT at Providence
The Friars won the first in a walkover. Providence 3-1

Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 9-10

Connecticut vs. Merrimack
A home-and-home where the Warriors will struggle to scored. Then again, so does Connecticut. Connecticut 2-1, 2-1

Vermont at Maine
The Black Bears struggled a lot in the first half. I’m seeing this as a split. Vermont 3-2, Maine 2-1

New Hampshire vs. Northeastern
Another home-and-home, but the Huskies have too much firepower. Northeastern 3-1, 4-1

Ohio State at Minnesota
The Gophers start their second half with a bang. Minnesota 4-1, 5-1

Tuesday, Jan. 12

Cornell at Colgate
Something tells me home ice is the deciding factor. Colgate 3-2

Syracuse at Union
The Orange haven’t played great so far, but should have enough to win this. Syracuse 3-1

Wednesday, Jan. 13

Northeastern at Providence
The Friars are playing better, but it won’t be enough. Northeastern 4-2

Weekend Picks: Jan. 8

The action gets back to full force this weekend as most women’s D-III teams are back at it. Last week, Candace did better than Matt, correctly picking Holy Cross to win the Rutlant tournament and Middlebury to beat Lake Forest.

Numerous ranked teams are on the ice with a few marquee matchups and tournaments to look at this weekend. Let’s see how Candace and Matt do.

Friday-Saturday, Jan. 8-9

No. 8 Middlebury at No. 6 Amherst
Candace: Hard to see anything but a split in this series. Like Matt, I think home team wins first. Amherst 3-2, Middlebury 3-2
Matt: Definitely a key series this weekend for both squads, and quite possibly, the top matchup of the entire weekend. It would be easy to call a split here, but alas, that’s too easy. I see Amherst winning 4-2 to open the series and then Middlebury winning Saturday 2-1, perhaps in overtime.

St. Michael’s Tournament Burlington, Vt.
Candace: I like Sacred Heart to advance to face the host, with St. Michael’s winning the tournament. Sacred Heart 3-2, St. Michael’s 2-1; St. Michael’s 3-2, Hamilton 3-0
Matt: Sacred Heart downs Plymouth State 4-1 and then St. Michael’s beats Hamilton 2-0 to open the event. Call it a 3-1 win for Sacred Heart Saturday against the host school and a 3-2 win for PSU against Hamilton to close the tournament.

Adrian Tournament in Adrian, Mich.
Candace: Look for the home team to win the tournament again, beating St. Olaf, while Manhattanville takes third over Finlandia. Adrian 4-1, St. Olaf 3-1; Adrian 4-2, Manhattanville 2-1
Matt: This has a home team win written all over it. The fourth-ranked Bulldogs will beat Manhattanville 5-2 and St. Olaf 3-0. Finlandia is also at this event and may not score a goal in tough losses to both Manhattanville and St. Olaf.

Saturday, Jan. 9

No. 9 Norwich at No. 2 Elmira
Candace: Elmira will be pushed in this one, but I still like the Soaring Eagles to win. Elmira 2-1
Matt: If it wasn’t for Plattsburgh, Elmira would be at the top of women’s D-III. That’s not the case, obviously, but the Soaring Eagles take this one over Norwich. I’ll say the final is 5-3 with a late empty-netter to account for the two-goal cushion.
