Boston University confirmed Monday that junior forward Nick Roberto won’t play this season amid a gambling investigation launched by the school.

The school issued a statement regarding Roberto’s status with the team:

“Beyond confirming that Mr. Roberto will not play for the Boston University hockey team this season, federal privacy laws prevent us from discussing his status.

“However, we can say that several months ago, we heard rumors that a BU hockey player had engaged in gambling. Although the rumors did not involve gambling on either college or professional hockey games, we nonetheless immediately conducted a thorough investigation and turned the results over to the appropriate authorities at the NCAA. Based on that investigation, the NCAA made its own findings and took remedial action, and we would refer you to that organization for further information.”

An NCAA spokesperson had no comment on the matter and referred questions back to the school.

Roberto hasn’t played in any of No. 11 Boston University’s 18 games this season after dressing for all 41 games as a sophomore and 33 as a freshman. He has 11 goals and 19 assists in 74 collegiate games.

The news came days after sophomore forward A.J. Greer left the Terriers to sign with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
