Former Minnesota head coach Sonmor passes away at 86

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Monday that former Minnesota head coach Glen Sonmor has died.

Sonmor was 86.

Succeeding John Mariucci behind the Gophers bench, Sonmor was named WCHA Coach of the Year in 1970 after leading Minnesota to the regular-season title. A year later, he led the team to a WCHA playoff title and NCAA runner-up finish.

During his time behind the Minnesota bench from 1966 to 1972, Sonmor compiled a 77-80-6 record before resigning midway through his sixth season of 1971-72.

He later worked full time on Gophers radio broadcasts as the color commentator and coached the NHL’s Minnesota North Stars.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
