This past weekend in the women’s Division III circles saw tournaments played, upsets posted, and all in all, dynamite action across the country.
Kicking off the weekend Friday night, unranked Connecticut College upset No. 10 Bowdoin 2-1. Kate Kohl scored both, including the game-winner midway through the third period. Bowdoin took the split with a 3-1 win Saturday on the strength of two Rachel Kennedy goals.
The marquee matchup of the weekend Sunday did not disappoint, as No. 2 Elmira defeated No. 3 Norwich 5-3. Cassidy Delainey scored a pair of goals for Elmira in front of 375 fans at the Murray Athletic Center. Ashton Hogan’s goal with 4:50 left in the second period stood as the game-winner, and Ashley Ryan added an empty-netter at 19:49 of the third period. Norwich had defeated Utica 2-1 on Friday night to start its weekend.
Logan Taylor’s goal at 17:21 of the third period was all No. 7 Adrian needed to beat No. 5 Gustavus Adolphus in a 1-0 win Friday night. Jade Walsh made 17 saves for the Bulldogs, who finished out the weekend with a 4-1 win over St. Mary’s the next night as four different players scored and Walsh contributed an assist on Kristin Lewicki’s game-winning goal late in the second period.
Gustavus topped Lake Forest by a 2-1 count on Saturday.
No. 4 Middlebury took care of business with a 3-1 win over Wesleyan Saturday night. Julia Wardwell had a goal and an assist for the Panthers.
No. 9 Amherst edged Colby 2-1 on Saturday behind two goals from Tori Salmon, sweeping the weekend series. Amherst started the series with a 3-1 win Friday night, as Emily Flom and Erin Martin each registered a goal and an assist and Breanna Sullivan rang up two assists.
No. 6 Wisconsin-River Falls took a pair of one-goal games against Concordia (Minn.), winning 3-1 Friday and 2-1 Saturday. Goalie Kylie Hommerding made 11 saves Saturday after Angie Hall stopped 12 in the opening games.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point, which entered last weekend eighth in the country, swept St. Thomas with a 3-1 win Friday night and then edged out a 3-2 OT win on Saturday, as Shauna Bollinger was the hero 3:22 into extra time.
Marian won both against Hamline, including a 2-0 shutout Sunday afternoon as Amanda Alexander kicked out all 28 shots she faced.
Oswego turned in two wins at the St. Michael’s Tournament with a 2-0 win over Plymouth State (Bridget Smith 13-save shutout) and then a 3-1 win over host St. Michael’s (Toni Trovato 19 saves). Hamilton put up two five-goal games in downing St. Michael’s 5-1 and Plymouth State 5-3.
The Rutland Herald Invitational saw Stevenson beat host Castleton 4-1 Friday and then Castleton beat Manhattanville 3-1 Saturday and Stevenson fall to Holy Cross 3-2, also on Saturday, as Izzy Bagi’s goal at 18:44 of the third period stood as the winner for the Crusaders. Kara Violette had tied the game for Holy Cross at 17:50 of the second.
