Damon Whitten will be named Lake Superior State’s coach at a news conference Saturday, sources told USCHO on Friday.
Whitten, an assistant at three stops in Michigan as well as at Alaska-Anchorage in the last 10 years, will replace Jim Roque, who was fired in March.
A Michigan State alumnus, Whitten has been an assistant coach at Michigan Tech for the last four seasons, following two years as the director of hockey operations at his alma mater.
Whitten also was an assistant coach at Anchorage (2006-08) and Wayne State (2004-06).
He’ll make the move to Sault Ste. Marie from Houghton, where he worked with the Michigan Tech penalty kill unit and as a recruiter.
Lake Superior State has scheduled a noon news conference on Saturday to make an announcement about the hockey coaching search.
The Lakers missed the playoffs in their first season in the WCHA, finishing 12-16 in the league and 16-19-1 overall.
The team hasn’t made the NCAA tournament since 1996, the final season of the six-year Jeff Jackson era that produced two national championships and a runner-up finish.
