The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston announced Wednesday that Trinity junior forward Jackson Brewer has been selected as the winner of the 14th annual Joe Concannon Award, which recognizes New England’s best American-born hockey player in Divisions II and III.
Brewer, a native of Newton, Mass., led the Bantams to the NESCAC regular-season championship, scoring 14 goals and adding 42 assists, including 11 assists in Trinity’s final three games.
He topped all Division III players in both points and assists and was the driving force for Trinity’s potent offense. The Bantams produced a total of 121 goals in just 26 games.
Brewer’s other honors included first-team NESCAC All-Star and NESCAC player of the year.
“This is a great honor for Jackson, who had an exceptional season and has been a key leader in helping our young forwards become successful in the college game,” Trinity coach Matt Greason said in a statement. “He knew he needed to change his game and he worked incredibly hard to become the player he was this past season. That commitment, dedication and work ethic really showed our younger players what is required to be successful at the college level.”
The last Trinity recipient of this award was Joseph Ori in 2005.
“I played with Joseph on that team and know that Jackson, like Joseph, is happy to win the award, but expects to leave the Trinity program better than when he arrived,” added Greason. “His commitment to doing all the right and little things to be successful certainly have him moving on that path. Winning the Concannon Award is, hopefully, a stepping stone to bigger and better things next year for Jackson and our program.”
Gridiron Club committee chairman Tim Costello said choosing a winner for the Concannon Award this season was extremely difficult.
“This year’s balanced play and depth of strong teams was quite evident at the D-II/III levels in New England, where more than six or seven teams were ranked nationally during the course of the season,” Costello said in a news release. “Every nominee had an outstanding season among many more performances across the region. These players are great examples of the college and amateur athletes that Joe Concannon so very much enjoyed covering and recognizing during his tenure as a sportswriter at the Boston Globe. Jackson Brewer, with his superb offensive skills, leadership and sportsmanship, has deservedly claimed his place among the group of distinguished past winners of the Concannon Award.”
