Former Bowdoin player, coach Corey passes away at 98

Former Bowdoin player and coach C. Nels Corey passed away on August 11 in Gardiner, Maine.

Corey was 98, but according to a Bowdoin news release, “he always greeted friends and former players alike with a laugh, genuine enthusiasm and the firm handshake of a man half his age.”

Corey earned All-New England honors as a goalie on the hockey team, graduating in 1939.

He also coached hockey and football at Colby and over the course of his career, also coached lacrosse at several levels and schools.

Corey left Bowdoin in 1965 and became athletic director at the Hotchkiss School for 15 years and then at North Yarmouth Academy.

Inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1997, Corey was in the first class inducted into the Bowdoin College Athletic Hall of Honor in 2002.

Corey married Kathleen Monaghan in 1947 and the two have two sons, Charlie and Jeff, and three grandchildren.

There will be a private service for the family, while a memorial service will be held at Bowdoin at a later date to be determined.
