Denver freshman Mermis bolts Pioneers for OHL’s London Knights

Denver freshman defenseman Dakota Mermis has decided to leave school to play in the Ontario Hockey League with the London Knights, the school announced Tuesday.

“Dakota has decided to take his hockey career in a different direction and we wish him good luck,” Denver coach George Gwozdecky said in a statement.

Mermis, who was a 12th-round pick of the Knights in the 2010 OHL draft and won a USHL Clark Cup title with the Green Bay Gamblers last year, played 19 games for the Pioneers this season and tallied a goal and three assists.

London is currently riding a 23-game unbeaten streak.
