ECAC West Weekend Recap

Circular game results have hit the ECAC West early this season.  Hobart beat Manhattanville on November 4.  This past weekend, Manhattanville beat Neumann, which beat Utica, but Utica beat Hobart on November 12.  My head is spinning.

The only team that has been able to stay above the fray is Elmira, and that has driven the Soaring Eagles out to a four point lead.  Elmira is a perfect 4-0 in league play after beating Hobart 5-3 on Friday.  The Soaring Eagles played a steady game, highlighted by a pair of goals from Jesper Strale, who also added an assist.

Freshman goaltender Ryan Melo got his first start in net for Elmira and stopped 29 of the 32 shots that he faced.

If other teams aren’t careful, Elmira might break free of the chaos behind them in the standings and start to run away with the league.

In other action this past weekend, Manhattanville overcame an early two-goal deficit to defeat Neuman 7-4 on Friday night.  Neumann scored two goals midway through the first period before the Valiants got rolling.  Three straight power-play goals got Manhattanville back in the game, and the Valiants rolled from there.  Junior Brendan Turner led the way with two goals and a pair of assists.

Neumann rallied on Saturday to beat Utica 2-1.  Only five penalties total were called in the entire game, as both teams were on their best behavior.  Both goal scorers for Neumann, Andrew Love and Jeff Bienvenue,  tallied their first goal of the season.  Evan Chlanda threw in his fifth goal of the season for Utica.

Every team but Utica hits the road for nonconference play this week.

Have a filling Thanksgiving and adventurous Black Friday.
