ECAC West picks Feb 4 to Feb 5

Four teams continue in league action this weekend for a pair of games each.  Elmira is the odd team out this week, hosting a one off game against Cortland.  The Soaring Eagles need to guard against a letdown as every non-conference game is key for an NCAA bid.

Cortland certainly can’t be overlooked as the Red Dragons swept the North Country trip (Plattsburgh and Potsdam) last weekend for the first time in many, many years.  Elmira beat Cortland 5-1 back in December, but since Cortland has played every other ECAC West team, the Soaring Eagles can’t afford to be the first team with a loss against the Red Dragons.

After being swept last weekend, Manhattanville’s season is teetering on the edge.  Another sweep and the Valiants might see their chances of an NCAA bid evaporate like the melting snow.

Manhattanville plays a home-and-home series against Utica, opening the weekend at Playland Ice Casino and finishing at The Aud.  Both teams like to play a physical brand of hockey so the games should be very entertaining for the fans.

Elsewhere in the league, Hobart hosts Neumann for a pair of games as well.  Since Hobart has played the fewest games in the league, their situation isn’t quite as desperate as Manhattanville’s but it’s close.  If the Statesmen can sweep Neumann, it puts them right back into the hunt.

However, Neumann has its eyes set on the top of the heap and a sweep this weekend would move them into a tie with Elmira for the lead in the league.

With only three weekends of hockey remaining in the regular season, everything is on the line.
