ECAC West weekend wrap up Jan. 17

Neumann had an up and down weekend at Morrisville.  The Knights didn’t come to play on Friday though, and Morrisville took full advantage, handing Neumann a 4-1 loss.

“Friday night, we just didn’t show up or play well,” said Neumann coach Dominick Dawes. ” They beat us in every aspect of the game.  They were a good, hard working team.”

Saturday was a different story, as the teams traded blows in a very closely-played contest.  Goals were scored back and forth at both ends of the ice in the opening two periods, resulting in a 3-3 tie after 40 minutes.  Neither team could score in the third period, and the game went to overtime.

Neumann was called for a penalty just a minute into the extra stanza, but was able to kill it off.  Then the Knights caught a break when a penalty was called on Morrisville and Brent Tamane tallied the power-play game-winner with 32 seconds remaining to give Neumann a 4-3 victory and weekend split.

“I was pretty proud of my guys Saturday night,” said Dawes.  “We regrouped.  It was a pretty good back and forth game and we had a lot of good quality chances and finally got to bury one.  It was a good opportunity and a pretty nice goal.  For our guys, from the mental side of it, it was a lift for them.  Our power play hasn’t been clicking as of late and it was a good lift for them to bury an overtime winner.”

The Manhattanville program won its 200th victory last Thursday, a 2-1 affair at Curry.  This completed the fourth undefeated nonconference schedule in team history, ending with a 12-0-1 record as the Valiants return to league play next weekend.

Coach Keith Levinthal, the only head coach the team has ever had, becomes the 41st Division III coach to reach 200 victories, and the eighth-fastest in just 305 games in 12  seasons.

Hobart also defeated Curry this past weekend, 8-1 on Saturday.  This finished off Curry’s tour of the ECAC West.  The Colonels deserve credit for scheduling game against every team in the league, four at home and one on the road.  The closest Curry came to knocking off an ECAC West team came early in the season when the Colonels scored a power-play goal with seven minutes remaining in the third period to earn a 4-4 tie against Elmira.

Hobart then romped over Nichols 7-2 on Sunday.  The Statesmen outscored their opponents 15-3 on the weekend.  Hobart’s offense will look to continue to roll against Morrisville next Saturday before returning to league play.

Utica continued the league’s roll through the ECAC Northeast last weekend with relatively easy games against Suffolk (6-1) and Wentworth (4-1).

Elmira had the toughest game of the weekend against Geneseo.  The Ice Knights established a 3-1 lead late in the first period, outshooting Elmira 21-7.  It looked like it was going to be a long night for the Soaring Eagles but Elmira rallied.  Kevin Willer chipped away at Geneseo’s lead with a goal midway through the second period, and then Dylan Herold and Rick Shrank each scored early in the third period to give Elmira a 4-3 victory.

With only a single nonconference game remaining, against Cortland in early February, Elmira is unbeaten in its last six games (5-0-1) and appears ready to renew league play.
