ECAC West weekend wrap up Dec. 6

The Hobart Statesmen are television stars.  Hobart’s game at Potsdam last Saturday was televised live in central New York by Time Warner cable and tape delay in the Rochester area.  Hobart got behind by a Bears’ goal just over three minutes into the game.

But the Statesmen got things rolling in the second period when the Cam Miller show started.  The sophomore scored his first two goals of the season in the second stanza to give Hobart a 2-1 lead it would never give up.  Miller scored his first midway through the period and then tallied the eventual game winner with just six seconds left in the period.

Hobart’s leading scorer Matthew Wallace gave the Statesmen a bit of a cushion midway through the third and then Tommy Florentino sealed the win with an empty netter with just over two minutes to go.  All of Hobart’s goals were scored with both teams at full strength.

Special teams ruled the night in Utica as the Pioneers played a steady game to defeat Manhattanville 5-3.  Each team scored a trio of power play goals in the game, but the difference was that Utica tallied a 4 on 4 goal and added an empty netter at the end.

There were eight different goal scorers in the contest.  Tim Coffman led all scorers with a goal and pair of assists.  As would be expected between these two teams, it was a rough and tumble affair.  Four unsportsmanlike penalties were called within the first eight minutes of the contest.

Utica’s special teams continued to dominate on Saturday as the Pioneers beat Buffalo State 4-2 on the road.  The Pioneers again scored three power play goals and added a 4 on 4 goal.

Eric Peterson tallied a pair of power play goals in the second period, including the eventual game winner, to spark Utica to the victory.

In the only other league contest last weekend Elmira once again found itself down by a pair of goals at the end of the first period against Neumann.  It is the fourth game in a row that the Soaring Eagles have gotten down by at least two goals early in the contest.

As has become Elmira’s modus operandi, they built momentum through the second period and came roaring back in the third.  Karl Linden scored a power play goal with just 20 seconds remaining in the second period to get Elmira on the board.  Kevin Willer tallied another extra attacker goal midway through the third to tie it up.

Etienne Archambault scored the game winner at 13:16 of the third and Darcy Vaillancourt threw in the fourth goal with just over a minute remaining.  Willer and Vaillancourt are tied leading Elmira in scoring with 20 points.
