So I’ve opened the season with a shaky 4-7 record in picks this week. But hey, the Bears kept me alive in survival football, so at least something in the pick ’em world went right this weekend. Here’s a quick wrap up of the weekend that was.
Friday 11/5
Assumption 6, Becker 3 (Becker Ice Breaker)
Johnson & Wales 8, Franklin Pierce 1
Westfield State 4, Nichols 4
Becker 7, Stoneill 2 (Becker Ice Breaker)
Salem 6, Wentworth 5
Saturday 11/6
Assumption 4, Becker 3 (Becker Ice Breaker)
Neumann 5, Curry 3
Suffolk 1, Stonehill 0 (Becker Ice Breaker)
Plymouth State 6, Southern New Hampshire 0
Sunday 11/7
Western New England 6, Westfield State 5 (OT)
Notes: Assumption won the Becker Ice Breaker tournament by taking down two pretty solid ECAC Northeast teams in Suffolk and Becker. Junior defenseman Kevin Glanzman’s power-play goal with 19 seconds left capped off three unanswered goals in the third period Saturday and helped the Greyhounds emerge with a 4-3 win.
Assumption’s Taylor Larsen earned tourney MVP honors, while Suffolk goalie Jeff Rose, Stonehill forward Angelo Todesca, Becker forward Korby Anderson, Becker defenseman Jeremy Narducci, and Suffolk forward Jason Molle comprised the all-tournament team.
Pretty wild one up in Westfield Friday night. Nichols led 4-1 in a penalty-filled content, but the Owls climbed back and tied the game with a minute left on Lucas Romero’s penalty shot. Check out the recap here.
On Saturday, Plymouth State opened it’s new arena in style, taking down Southern New Hampshire 6-0. More on that later in the week.
And Western New England closed the weekend with a stunning 6-5 win over Westfield State in overtime. The Golden Bears’ freshman class played a large role in the win, as John Kelly’s second goal gave WNEC the win with 34 seconds left in overtime. Classmate Trent Krueger assisted on the winning strike, while also notching a score of his own. And in net, freshman Eric Sorenson turned away 31 shots in his Golden Bears debut.
