2005 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner Marty Sertich of Colorado College officially has a chance to repeat, as his name was among the 10 finalists for the 2006 award announced Thursday by the Hobey Baker Foundation.
Sertich was once again joined by teammate Brett Sterling as a finalist; those two comprised two-thirds of last year’s Hobey Hat Trick. The two seniors led the Tigers in scoring this season, as Sertich has 14 goals and 34 assists and Sterling, 31 goals and 23 assists.
Colorado College’s in-state rival, Denver, had defenseman Matt Carle named as a Hobey Baker finalist. Carle leads the nation in assists with 42, and tops all defensemen in points with 53 points.
Also named was junior goaltender Brian Elliott of Wisconsin, who leads the nation in wins with 22 and winning percentage at .810. He also tops the nation with a goals against average of 1.68.
Ryan Potulny of Minnesota is the fifth member of the top 10 from the WCHA. He leads the country in goals with 34, and his 58 points is second in the nation.
The CCHA placed two players among the list of finalists as Scott Parse of Nebraska-Omaha and Andy Greene of Miami were selected.
Parse leads the nation with 61 points (20-41–61) a mark that has set a school record for the Mavericks. He was also a unanimous First Team All-CCHA selection.
Greene, a stalwart on defense for Miami, was the other unanimous All-CCHA First Teamer, and has been an All-CCHA selection for the past three seasons. The reliable captain has not missed a single game in his four years at Miami.
Hockey East placed two in the top 10: Greg Moore of Maine and Chris Collins of Boston College.
Moore is the leading scorer for Maine with 26 goals and 16 assists. His 26 goals ranks sixth in the nation and he also tied for the Hockey East goal-scoring title with 18 conference tallies.
Collins tied Moore in Hockey East goals, but won the Hockey East scoring title with 39 points in conference play, six point more than the competition. He has 30 goals and 27 assists overall.
T.J. Trevelyan of St. Lawrence rounds out the list. The senior forward leads all ECACHL players in points with 48, scoring 20 goals and 28 assists. That also helped him capture the ECACHL conference scoring title with 32 points (12-20–32).
The top three finalists will be announced as the “Hobey Hat Trick” on March 29, 2006. The three members of the Hat Trick will be present at the Bradley Center on April 7, when the winner will be announced at 7:30 ET.
