The United States announced the final six players added to the 2004 United States Women’s Select Team on Monday, to complete the team after the first 15 were named last month. The team will look to defend its title against teams from Canada, Sweden and Finland at the Four Nations Cup in Lake Placid, N.Y., beginning Nov. 10. The annual tournament is the most prestigious international women’s event aside from the World Championships and the Olympics.
Joining the 15 women named to the team on Sept. 30 are returning Select Team defensemen Jamie Hagerman (Wenham, Mass.), Kim Insalaco (Rochester, N.Y.) and Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska). All three captured gold at the 2003 Four Nations Cup with Team USA. Insalaco and Weiland were on the silver-medal winning team at the 2004 World Championships.
Adding to the U.S. offensive corps are Gretchen Anderson (Natick, Mass.), Andrea Kilbourne (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) and Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.). Anderson is making her senior debut for Team USA after participating in the Women’s Festival in August. Kilbourne, a 2002 Olympian, notched four points in five games at the recent World Championship, while Tabb competed in the Four Nations Cup back in 2002.
The U.S. is hosting the tournament for the third time in Four Nations Cup history, and the first time since 2000. Last year, Team USA defeated Canada in a 12-round shootout for the gold medal. Eight-time Women’s National Team member and two-time Olympian Cammi Granato (Downers Grove, Ill.) scored the game-winner and is one of 11 Olympians on the team.
Team USA opens the tournament against Finland in the first of three round-robin games at the Lake Placid Olympic Center on Nov. 10. All games will be at Lake Placid, except Thursday night’s game between U.S. and Canada at Burlington, Vt.
