Wisconsin used four power-play goals and six different goal scorers in a 7-1 win over Bemidji State (9-23-1, 6-17-1) at Capitol Ice Arena on Saturday. Freshman Meghan Hunter led the UW offense with a goal and three assists.
Wisconsin (19-8-5, 13-6-5 WCHA) scored three first-period power-play goals to grab a 3-0 lead. Karen Rickard scored the first with a deflection of Nicole Uliasz’s point shot at 9:40. Kerry Weiland then made it 2-0 with a point shot at 12:21. Hunter and Kendra Antony set up the score. Antony recovered a loose puck off the stick of Hunter, who had stick-handled into the slot for the third power-play score. Antony’s goal, also assisted by Uliasz, went in the net at 14:58.
Liz Jankowski scored the first goal of the second period and the first even-strength goal of the game. Natascha Sherman tipped the puck to Uliasz just inside the Bemidji State blue line. Uliasz then found Jankowski open at the far post for the finish at 7:00. It was Jankowski’s second goal of the season.
Sherman would up the lead to five, scoring on her own rebound at 9:28. Kelly Kegley and Rickard set up the play.
BSU finally broke through at 11:23 when Lisa Peters found the net. Kristie Hoefer won the offensive zone faceoff back to Peters, who fired past Jackie MacMillan.
The Badgers added two more goals in the third period. Hunter scored her 38th of the season, redirecting a pass from Steph Millar at 8:51. Then, Antony wrapped up the scoring with a power-play tally at 12:15. Hunter and Weiland set up Antony’s 17th of the year.
The Badgers were a sizzling 4-for-7 on the power-play and outshot the Beavers 55-19 for the game.
MacMillan played the first two periods and made 11 saves in her 16th win. Jen Neary replaced MacMillan for the third and turned away all seven shots taken. Anik Cote made 48 saves for the Beavers, but fell to 2-7-1.
“This was a great way to end our regular season,” Wisconsin coach Trina Bourget said. “We are going to face Bemidji again next week. They are going to be ready to come right back. They are not a team that gives up and they are physical. We will have to move the puck and play sound defense.”
The Badgers and Beavers will meet for a third consecutive time on Thursday in the opening round of the WCHA Women’s Championship. The game is slated for 4 p.m. Central at the Recreation Center in Rochester, Minn.
