Steve Cygan broke out of a scoring slump with two goals in helping the Alaska Anchorage to a
3-3 overtime tie with Wisconsin in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game at Sullivan Arena.
The Seawolves are now 5-17-3 overall and 3-15-3 in WCHA play while Wisconsin moves to 14-11-2 overall and 9-8-2 in league play.
Cygan, who hadn’t scored a goal since Oct. 28, gave UAA a 1-0 lead on a power play goal at 8:11 of the first period. Matt Shasby and Gregg Zaporzan received assists.
But the Badgers went on a tear, reeling off three goals – from Jeff Dessner, Brad Winchester and Dave Hergert – in the span of just three minutes to go up 3-1.
Cygan’s second goal of the night at 18:36 of the first period on an assist from Zaporzan brought UAA to within one, 3-2, at the end of the opening frame.
The Seawolves’ Jesse Unklesbay tied things at 3-all at 6:21 of second period on assists from Pete Talafous and Morgan Roach. But after six goals over the game’s first 26 minutes, neither team would score over the game’s final 39 minutes – including five minutes of sudden-death overtime.
After being outshot by a commanding 14-6 margin in the first period, UAA held the upperhand with a modest 18-17 shots on goal advantage from there. UAA freshman goalie Chris King came up big in net for the Seawolves, with 28 saves. The Badgers’ Graham Melanson stopped 21. The Seawolves were 1-for-6 on the power play while Wisconsin was scoreless in four man-advantage opportunities.
