The U.S. National Junior Team outshot Sweden 46-23, but suffered a 1-0 loss Monday at the 2016 World Junior Championship in Helsinki.

[scg_html_wjc2016]Team USA goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic finished the game with 22 saves.

United States captain and Michigan defenseman Zach Werenski was named the U.S. player of the game.

Sweden scored the game’s only goal at 2:41 of the second period when Alexander Nylander converted on a mini breakaway.

Linus Soderstrom stopped all 46 shots for Sweden.

A late surge to tie the game fell short when late penalties left the U.S. shorthanded in the final minutes of the contest. The penalty kill was successful, but Team USA wasn’t able to convert on a shorthanded effort.

“We did everything but score,” said U.S. coach Ron Wilson in a news release. “We created opportunities and had 46 shots on goal, but you have to give their goalie credit. We’ll regroup and be ready for Wednesday.”

The United States (1-0-0-1) will continue competition at 1 p.m. EDT on Wednesday against Switzerland.
