Mallory Young was named head coach of the Colby women’s team Wednesday after one year as interim head coach, four years as an assistant coach and four years playing for the Mules.

“Mallory did an impressive job as our interim head coach this past season,” said Colby director of athletics Marcella Zalot in a news release. “Her approach is very student-focused and she clearly understands the development of the whole person through the sport of ice hockey. She is creating a positive team culture and is personable and energetic herself. She has a strong grasp of the demands of recruiting. Mallory will continue to meet the challenges and lead our program to great success.”

Young, a 2005 Colby graduate, helped the Mules stun second-seeded Amherst in a NESCAC quarterfinal game and reach the league semifinals this past season. Colby finished 10-14-2 and had two victories over rival and defending league champion Bowdoin during the regular season.

“I’m thrilled and yet humbled to have this opportunity to lead Colby women’s hockey,” added Young, a forward during her playing days. “To coach at my alma mater is truly an opportunity of a lifetime.

“Our team made some great strides this season and established a strong foundation for the future. We are excited to continue this progress, not only on the ice, but also with our leadership on campus and in the community.”

Young came back to Colby after serving as an assistant women’s coach at Williams and also spent one year as an assistant at Massachusetts-Boston during the 2007-08 season.

Besides her hockey duties, Young was also the interim head coach for Colby’s golf team in 2011 and helped the squad to three tournament wins.
