Northern Michigan finished the season with a 4-0 record against Lake Superior State, as the Wildcats dropped the Lakers 5-1 at the Taffy Abel Arena Saturday night.<\/p>\n
Chris Gobert and Dan Donnette were keys in the Wildcats’ win, tallying two goals and three assists, respectively.<\/p>\n
Lake Superior took a 1-0 lead with a goal from Will Magnuson just 50 seconds into the game, but it was all Northern Michigan after that.<\/p>\n
Gobert put the Wildcats on the board with a power-play goal at 15:07 in the first period, and 30 seconds later Alan Swanson gave NMU a 2-1 lead when he scored off a pass from Justin Kinnunen.<\/p>\n
Kinnunen put the Wildcats up by two when he knocked one past Laker netminder Matt Violin 11:57 into the second period.<\/p>\n
The scoring stopped until 2:05 into the third when Gobert capitalized on a pass from Jesse Baraniuk for his second of the night and 14th of the season.<\/p>\n
Junior Scott Murray replaced Violin in the LSSU with 9:13 remaining in the game and stopped nine shots.<\/p>\n
With 5:04 remaining to play, the Wildcats got a second goal from Swanson to take the 5-1 win.<\/p>\n
By the end of the contest, NMU had outshot the Lakers 45-16. After winning a 3-2 contest in Marquette Friday night and sweeping the home-and-home series against the Lakers in November, the Wildcats walked away with the regular-season sweep of LSSU. <\/p>\n
The Wildcats also retained possession of the Cappo Cup, which is awarded annually to the winner of the regular-season series between the two teams.<\/p>\n
Violin stopped 33 shots for LSSU, who said farewell to seniors Magnuson, Tyson Turgeon, Chris Thompson, and captain Chris McNamara following the game.<\/p>\n
NMU improved to 23-11-2 overall and 16-10-2 in the CCHA. The Lakers fell to 7-25-2 and 4-22-2. <\/p>\n
LSSU will face regular-season champion Michigan next weekend in the first round of the CCHA playoffs. The Wolverines clinched first place with a 6-2 victory over Western Michigan Saturday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
