Sophomore Derek Edwardson registered his first career hat trick against Notre Dame Saturday night and in doing so helped Miami end a two-game slide with the 7-3 victory. The RedHawks continued to have success on the power play, going 2-for-5 in the contest and 4-for-11 on the weekend.

After a 4-3 overtime loss on Friday night, Edwardson lifted the RedHawks’ spirits with an early goal at 1:07 in the opening period. Nick Jardine and Brian Sipotz were credited with the assists.

Senior Mike Glumac upped Miami’s lead to 2-0 at 5:22 when he struck for his 13th goal of the season. Registering an assist on the goal and moving into a five-way tie on Miami’s 100-point club was senior Jason Deskins, his 123rd career point (61-62-123).

Notre Dame’s Aaron Gill briefly broke up the Miami scoring with his eighth goal of the season at 12:02, narrowing the margin to 2-1. However, Jardine netted the RedHawks’ third goal of the period at 18:19 on a power play to give his team a 3-1 lead at the first intermission.

Miami picked up where it left off in the first period with its fourth goal of the contest from sophomore Greg Hogeboom at 3:46 in the second frame. Hogeboom’s goal gave the RedHawks a 4-1 advantage and moved his personal tally to a team-leading 14 goals this season. Edwardson netted his second goal of the contest 46 seconds later after receiving a nifty pass from sophomore Mike Kompon.

Yan Stastny netted Notre Dame’s second goal of the game at 17:13, cutting the Irish deficit to 5-2. Michael Chin and Gill recorded assists on the goal.

The RedHawks continued to pour on the offense as Jardine lit the lamp for the second time in the contest at 7:08 in the final period. Kompon recorded his career-best third helper of the game on Jardine’s goal.

With the game all but over and the RedHawks leading 6-2, Edwardson finished his first career hat trick at 10:41 in the third stanza. Jardine registered his fourth point of the night with an assist on the goal, joining Edwardson with four points.

Despite allowing a late power-play goal to Notre Dame’s Michael Chin at 16:51, junior goalie David Burleigh stopped a career-best 39 shots en route to his tenth victory of the season.

The RedHawks (11-13-2, 8-10-2 CCHA) make the trek down to Nebraska-Omaha next weekend for a two-game series with the Mavericks Feb. 1-2, while the Irish (9-12-5, 7-9-4 CCHA) host Alaska-Fairbanks.
