The Regina Cougars, despite being outshot 44-25 on the night, edged past the Bemidji State Beavers, 2-1, in overtime Friday night at John S. Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji.

Regina’s Adam Fraser put in an unassisted goal at the 3:01 mark of overtime, the only Cougar shot of the extra frame.

“I wasn’t disappointed in the play of the team,” BSU head coach Tom Serratore said. “Good teams find a way to win, and that was a tough one for us to lose.”

Regina got on the board first, netting an even-strength goal from Lee Schaeffer at the 15:45 mark of the second period. BSU would answer less than three minutes later, as Travis Barnes would take advantage of a Blair Simpson two-minute cross-checking minor and put BSU on the board with a power-play goal at 18:40.

BSU outshot Regina 11-7 in the frame. The teams then skated to a scoreless third with BSU again winning the shots battle, 16-11.

Bemidji State outshot Regina 44-25 on the night, with Cougar goalie Graham Cook making 43 saves. Marty Goulet led the Beavers with a game-high eight shots on goal. Kurtis Dulle took a team-high four shots for the Cougars and was +2 on the night.

“It was a good learning experience for us, and a good tune-up for next week’s series,” said senior defenseman Mark Phenow. “We looked rough around the edges.”

Bemidji State opens regular-season action on Friday, Oct. 12 against WCHA member Minnesota State-Mankato. The opening faceoff of that contest is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Central time in Bemidji. The teams will then square off again at 7:35 p.m. Oct. 13.
