The Ohio State Buckeyes and their 11 freshmen were led by one of their few upperclassmen, as Danny Dries’s four-point effort led the squad to a 6-5 exhibition win over the Windsor Lancers.

Ohio State nearly let a 6-2 advantage slip through its hands. The Lancers scored three unanswered third period goals to cut the Buckeyes’ lead to one. Ohio State freshman Max McCormick was boxed for a scrum after the whistle, which gave Windsor a power play in the final five minutes of the game.

“Considering we threw a lot of new guys into the lineup, you kind of thought it would be raggedy,” Ohio State coach Mark Osiecki said. “I thought it was a good thing in a game like that, where you score five or six goals and they come back and make it close. It will help us moving forward.”

Ohio State freshmen Darik Angeli and Riley Simpson notched goals, and highly-touted newcomer Ryan Dzingel had three assists. D.J. Turner had two goals and an assist for the Lancers, and teammates Evan Stibbard and Steve Ferry had a two point effort.

After a scoreless first period, Ohio State exploded for four goals in the second to hold a 4-1 second intermission lead. After Danny Dries and Alex Carlson each scored to give OSU a 6-1 lead, Windsor responded with a four goal third period.

“I think after our fifth and sixth goal, we eased up,” Osiecki said. “That is an example of a young team.”
