Minnesota Duluth played from behind the start the game and tied the game three times throughout the night to ensure the final 6-5 win. Riley Tufte took point with two goals and two assists to lead his team.
Colorado College answered after every goal from Duluth, but when Westin Michaud scored on a power play at 7:29 of the third period, they were already too far behind. UMD had peeled away with three unanswered goals in the second period, two by Tufte at 3:32 and 14:02 and the third by Peter Krieger that was also assisted by Tufte at 15:58.
The action of the first period generated a roller coaster of scoring where UMD was forced to tie the game and play with the deficit. Jared Thomas scored on a power play at 17:06 when he tied the game for the third time in a response to CC’s power-play goal at 13:47 of the first period. CC had their own pair of goals to bring the Colorado Springs World Arena to its feet when they took their first lead on Kristian Blumenschein’s mark. Peter Krieger netted UMD’s opening goal that was also assisted on another Tufte effort. Alex Leclerc was pulled in the second period after letting in all six goals to make way for Alec Calvaruso as relief.
