Yanick Evola scored a hat trick and added an assist as the X-men of St. Francis Xavier in Nova Scotia defeated the University of Vermont, 5-0, Friday in an exhibition college hockey game at
UVM’s Gutterson Fieldhouse.
St. Francis Xavier, one of the top collegiate teams in Canada, scored first when Evola scored a power-play goal on a tip-in from former Princeton defenseman Dominique Auger and Carl Beaudoin with 40 seconds left in the first period.
The X-men made it 2-0 on a short-handed tally by Steve Nimigon at 4:40 of the second period, with Auger and Beaudoin assisting. The winners then added goals from Evola and Guy Loranger to close out the second period with a 4-0 lead.
St. Francis Xavier made it 5-0 early in the third when Evola scored his third of the game on the power play.
Vermont’s Shawn Conschafter made 14 saves for the Catamounts, while David Haun stopped 20 for the X-men.
St. Francis Xavier will travel to play Dartmouth on Saturday evening while Vermont will host Queen’s next weekend.
