Alaska holds onto Governor’s Cup after beating Alaska-Anchorage, winning shootout tiebreaker

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska completed a comeback to retain the Governor’s Cup, beating Alaska-Anchorage 3-2 on Saturday to tie the season series.

The Nanooks then beat the Seawolves 1-0 in a shootout that determined which team ended its season holding the trophy.

Alaska (19-13-2, 14-12-2 WCHA) built a 3-0 lead on second-period goals by Tayler Munson, Trevor Campbell and Josh Erickson.

Tad Kozun and Austin Azurdia scored later in the period for Alaska-Anchorage (8-22-4, 5-21-2), which ended its season losing 11 of its last 12 games.

The Nanooks’ Tyler Morley scored the only goal in the shootout, and Sean Cahill stopped all three Seawolves shots.

Alaska-Anchorage won both games of the first series the teams played this season, in January in Fairbanks. Alaska won Friday’s game in Anchorage 1-0.

Alaska finished fourth in the WCHA standings but is ineligible for postseason play this season due to NCAA violations.

The Nanooks were 7-0-1 in their last eight games.
