Holstrom, Penn State stun Wisconsin with OT goal

Taylor Holstrom can forever claim he finished Penn State’s first varsity season in a great way.

Holstrom scored his second goal of the game with 34 seconds left in overtime to complete a rally from a two-goal, third-period deficit for a 3-2 victory over No. 16 Wisconsin on Monday.

It was the final game of the season for Penn State, playing as an independent before joining the new Big Ten Conference next season, and the Nittany Lions finished 13-14, including 11-12 against Division I competition.

Holstrom started the rally just seven seconds after Joseph LaBate put the Badgers (14-11-7) ahead 2-0 in the third period. Casey Bailey scored with 7:44 remaining in regulation to tie the game, then helped set up Holstrom’s winner.

Matthew Skoff stopped 42 shots for Penn State; Landon Peterson made 33 saves for Wisconsin.

Mark Zengerle put Wisconsin ahead late in the second period but the Badgers couldn’t hold on and fell to 7-7-3 at home.

Penn State finished the season 3-2 against Big Ten foes with splits at Wisconsin and at Michigan State and a win over Ohio State on neutral ice.
